CQ magazine will accept contact confirmations made on
the eQSL.cc electronic confirmation system for its operating awards effective immediately, CQ Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, and eQSL Founder and Webmaster Dave Morris, N5UP, announced Tuesday.
Starting January 1 of each year, the DX Marathon is the perfect answer for the DX-er who needs that extra incentive to get on the air every day! Simply work as many countries and CQ Zones as you can in each calendar year, regardless of the band or mode. Each country and zone counts only once, so you can concentrate on working new ones rather than working the same ones on multiple bands or modes.
As of January 1, 2009, the ARRL will offer another award: The Triple Play Worked All States Award. This new, exciting award is available to all amateurs who confirm contacts with each of the 50 states using three modes for each state: CW, phone and RTTY/digital. All 150 contacts must be made on or after the starting date and must be confirmed via Logbook of the World (LoTW). All bands -- with the exception of 60 meters -- may be used in pursuit of the Triple Play Award.
On Friday, he ARRL Awards Branch unveiled a new design for two IARU award certificates: the Worked All Continents Award (WAC) and the 5 Band Worked All Continents Award (5BWAC). WAC is awarded to amateurs who have confirmed contacts on any band with Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Oceania, while 5BWAC recognizes hams who have made confirmed contacts with those continents on 10, 15, 20, 40 and 80 meters.

An amateur's legal operating authority in the USA comes from the data in the FCC's ULS database (see FCC rules, Part 97.5(a) & 97.7(a)), and not from the paper license that the FCC prints and mails, which is just a legal notification of that data (although the paper license may be required by foreign governments if you travel outside the USA). In fact, the FCC provides a web page for printing a "reference" copy of any FCC license:
* Go to the FCC Universal Licensing System.
* Search for a callsign.
* Select the callsign to display the license data page.
* Click on "Reference Copy".
However, neither the FCC's mailed copy nor (especially) their web page reference copy is very attractive. For a high-resolution (1200 dpi) color license reference copy suitable for printing, enter your callsign below (change the fonts & watermark color if you wish) and click "Generate".
A new Triple Play Award will be created within six months for radioamateurs who achieve Worked All States (WAS) on voice, CW and digital modes. All 150 QSLs must be presented through the Logbook of The World (LoTW). Only those contacts made after the awards start date will be eligible.
A QSL card sent 55 years ago by Arthur Noakes, G2FTK, now president of the Coventry Amateur Radio Society, was spotted on Ebay by Andy G6ULX, and fellow Society member, Brian G8GMU, successfully bid for the card.
Attention 6 meter operators -- there's a new award to work toward! The ARRL Board of Directors approved a new award honoring the late Fred Fish, W5FF, the only amateur who worked and confirmed all 488 grid squares in the 48 contiguous United States on 6 meters. The Fred Fish Memorial Award will be granted to any amateur who duplicates Fish's accomplishment. Fish was a mainstay on the VHF+ bands for many years, having achieved Worked All States (WAS) on 6 meters through 432 MHz, as well as DXCC for 6 meters. He is widely regarded as a gentleman operator and one of the finest amateurs in the VHF+ community. ARRL Contest Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, will oversee this award. Kutzko, an avid VHF+ operator himself, said, "We hope the new award will increase 6 meter activity throughout the US and the world. We also hope it will lead to the activation of rare grid squares in the US by encouraging the native ham population of a rare grid square to give 6 meters a try, as well as through so-called 'Grid DXpeditions.' We actively call on the 6 meter community to help educate VHF+ newcomers to the fun that is available on 6 meters." Complete details on the Fred Fish Memorial Award will be available soon.
Rules and Application Process:
(I'm still offering the QRPp award, on a very nice looking certificate,
and hope that you'll not only apply for the award but that you'll make
QRPp operating a regular part of your amateur radio activities!!)
1. The applicant's transmitter output power, during the period of qualifying communications, was accurately measured to be less than one watt (QRPp).
2. The distance between the applicant's transmitting antenna and the reciving station was over 63.3 miles (100 kilometers).
3. No artificial means of active relay was used to complete the communications (i.e., repeaters, satellite transponders, digi-peaters, land-lines, etc.).
4. Send a signed statement to the certificate manager (me!) affirming that the transmitter power was less than one watt, the distance was greater than 100 kilometers, and no artificial means of active relay was utilized. Provide the certificate manager with a photocopy of the station log, or photocopy of the confirmation QSL card (Electronic QSL cards are not acceptable), clearly showing the date, time, mode, and frequency on which the qualifying communication took place. If desired, provide the certificate manager with information concerning any endosements (such as longer distances, even lower power levels, WAC, WAS, WAZ, solar power, etc.) that you may want listed on your certificate.
5. Mail $4.00 USD ($5.00 USD for foreign), to cover the three P's (postage, paper, and printing) along with the aforementioned application materials to Roger Wendell at this address:
